Using holy water at home
Get it from your parish. Holy water is water blessed by a priest or deacon. Fill a clean bottle at the font or dispenser; it is free. You cannot make it yourself.
Bless yourself. Dip your fingers and make the Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. It recalls your baptism.
Going out and coming home. Keep a little by the door and bless yourself as you leave and as you come back.
Bless your home. Sprinkle a little in each room, at the doors and the windows, and ask God to keep this house and everyone in it.
Bless your children. At bedtime, trace a small cross with it on each forehead.
Return it to the earth. Pour old holy water onto soil or into a garden, never down a drain.
A prayer as you bless yourself
By this holy water and by your Precious Blood, wash away all my sins, O Lord.Protect this home, body and soul, and keep every evil far from this place. In the name of the Father, and of the Son,and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
A traditional prayer for taking holy water, with a petition for the home.
Holy water is a sacramental, not a charm: it carries the prayer of the Church and asks for faith in the one who uses it (Catechism 1667 to 1670). For a house blessing, or anything that frightens you, ask your parish priest.
