Compline — Night Prayer

O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

"Look! Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who stand by night in the Lord’s house!" — Psalm 134:1

EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE:

Lord, I pause to reflect on this day. Where have I failed You? Where have I failed others? Where have I failed myself? I bring these moments to You now, trusting in Your mercy.

[Pause for silent reflection]

I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do — through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. I ask blessed Mary, ever-Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

HYMN:

Before the ending of the day, Creator of the world, we pray that You, with steadfast love, would keep Your watch around us while we sleep.

From evil dreams defend our sight, from fears and terrors of the night. Restrain the devil's treacherous might, that no pollution stain our rest.

PRAYER:

Visit, we beseech You, O Lord, this dwelling, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy. Let Your holy angels dwell within to preserve us in peace, and let Your blessing be upon us always, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

May the all-powerful Lord grant us a restful night and a peaceful death. Amen.

Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in His peace.
