Prayer for Family Protection
Place a hedge of protection around every member of your household.
A short prayer for family protection: “Heavenly Father, I place my family in your hands: N., N. and N. Protect each of us in body, mind and soul, at home and wherever we go today. Keep us from harm and from sin, keep us united and quick to forgive, and send your angels to guard us. Holy Family of Nazareth, pray for us. Amen.” Below it: the full family protection prayer and a parent’s prayer over children, then how to pray Psalm 121 and Psalm 91 over your family, a prayer for comfort when the whole family is hurting, and how to pray together as a household.
Family Protection Prayer — Full Text
A covering prayer for the whole household — pray each member by name.
Heavenly Father, I bring my family before Your throne of grace. I ask You to place a hedge of protection around each member of my household.
Lord Jesus, cover my family with Your Precious Blood. Place Your Cross between us and every evil spirit, every curse, every hex, and every work of darkness directed at us.
I pray for my spouse: Lord, protect their mind, body, and soul. Guard their heart from temptation. Strengthen our marriage bond.
I pray for my children: Lord, shield them from every predator — physical, spiritual, and digital. Guard their innocence. Protect their minds from the lies of the enemy. Surround them with Your holy angels.
I pray for our home: Lord, let this house be a sanctuary of Your presence. Drive out every spirit of division, anger, fear, and chaos. Fill our home with Your peace, Your joy, and Your love.
Saint Michael, defend our family. Guardian Angels of each family member, be vigilant in your protection. Holy Family of Nazareth — Jesus, Mary, and Joseph — pray for us.
Lord, I consecrate my family to Your Sacred Heart. We are Yours. We trust in You. No weapon formed against us shall prosper.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
From the Church’s tradition: The Christian family is "the domestic church" — and praying over it is the oldest duty of Christian parents, from the blessing of children in Scripture to the household prayers of the early Church.
Protection Over My Children
A parent’s prayer — "Let the little children come to me" (Mark 10:14).
Lord Jesus, You who said "Suffer the little children to come unto me" — I bring my children to You right now. Not just to bless them, but to place them under Your mighty protection.
"Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God." — Mark 10:14
Lord, the world my children are growing up in frightens me. The threats are real — physical, digital, spiritual. I cannot be everywhere. I cannot see everything. I cannot protect them from every danger. But You can. And I trust You to do what I cannot.
PROTECT THEIR INNOCENCE:
Lord, in a world that seeks to corrupt children at younger and younger ages, be their shield. Guard what enters their eyes and ears. Protect them from predators — both those who lurk in person and those who lurk online. Place Your holy angels around them as sentinels.
PROTECT THEIR FAITH:
The enemy targets children because he knows their faith is powerful. Protect the seeds of belief You have planted in their hearts. Let no cynicism, no mockery, and no worldly philosophy uproot what You have sown.
PROTECT THEIR FRIENDSHIPS:
Lord, surround them with friends who will build them up, not tear them down. Expose any friendship that leads them away from You. Give them the courage to stand alone when standing with the crowd means standing against You.
PROTECT THEIR FUTURE:
I entrust their future to You completely. Their education, their careers, their marriages, their calling — all of it belongs to You. Guide them with a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day.
Lord, I refuse to parent from a place of fear. I parent from a place of faith — faith that the God who parted the Red Sea can protect my children from anything this world throws at them.
Guardian Angels of my children, I call upon you. Be vigilant. Be fierce. Never leave their side.
In Jesus' holy name. Amen.

About this prayer
1 min readNothing exposes the heart like having a family — because nothing else of yours walks around outside your protection all day.
Nothing exposes the heart like having a family — because nothing else of yours walks around outside your protection all day. Scripture’s answer to that fear is not to pretend the dangers are unreal; it is to bring the household, member by member, under the protection of God who “will put his angels in charge of you” (Psalm 91:11).
The first prayer below covers the whole household — spouse, children, home — asking God to place a hedge of protection around each one. The second is a parent’s prayer specifically over children: their bodies, their minds, their friendships, what reaches them through their screens, and their souls. Pray them by name; the naming matters.
Praying over a family
1 min read
The "hedge of protection" the first prayer asks for comes from the Book of Job, where even the accuser admits he cannot touch what God has hedged: “Haven’t you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side?” (Job 1:10). A family prayer claims that fence — not as a guarantee that nothing hard will ever happen, but as the settled placement of the household inside God’s governance rather than outside it.
Pray for the members one at a time, by name, and pray for the bonds as well as the people: the marriage, the relationships between siblings, the peace of the home itself. The tradition is blunt that division is the enemy’s preferred entry into a family — which is why family protection prayers always include forgiveness within the family, not only defense from outside it.
Then make it a rhythm. A family that is prayed over once during a crisis has been defended once; a family prayed over nightly lives in different territory. The night prayers and the home blessing on this site are built to be that rhythm.
When to pray it
1 min readNightly, over the household — by name.
- Nightly, over the household — by name.
- When a family member walks out the door into something hard: exams, deployments, surgery, a difficult season.
- During family conflict — beginning with forgiveness inside the walls.
- For family members far from the faith — persistent, named, patient intercession.
A short prayer for family protection
1 min readFor the moment at the door, or the last minute before sleep.
For the moment at the door, or the last minute before sleep. A short prayer is not a lesser prayer: the Catechism says “it is always possible to pray” (CCC 2743), even in a few words.
Lord, protect my family today:
keep us safe, keep us close to you,
and keep us close to one another.
Amen.
How to pray Psalm 121 over your family
1 min readPsalm 121 is a traveler’s psalm and a household psalm: it promises God’s keeping “by day” and “by night,” going out and coming in.
Psalm 121 is a traveler’s psalm and a household psalm: it promises God’s keeping “by day” and “by night,” going out and coming in. To pray it over your family, read it aloud and say each person’s name in the last two verses: “The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more” (Psalm 121:7–8).
Lord, you are the keeper of this family.
You do not slumber or sleep.
Keep N. and N. from all evil;
keep their souls.
Keep their going out this morning
and their coming in tonight,
from this time forward, and forever more.
Amen.
The whole psalm, with its history and use, is on Psalm 121.
The psalms of protection for a family: 91 and 121
1 min readTwo psalms are prayed over families more than any others.
Two psalms are prayed over families more than any others. Psalm 121 asks God to keep the household’s comings and goings. Psalm 91 asks for shelter under his wings and gives the promise of the angels: “he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11). The Church prays Psalm 91 every Sunday at Night Prayer.
No psalm is “most powerful” in the sense of working better than another; the power is God’s, and the Church warns against treating any prayer as a formula (CCC 2111). But Psalm 91 is the one Christians have reached for longest in fear, and there is a full page on it, with how to pray it over a home: Psalm 91, the prayer of protection.
A prayer for comfort for the whole family
1 min readFor a family that is hurting together: after a death, a diagnosis, a job lost, a move, a break-up, or a long illness.
For a family that is hurting together: after a death, a diagnosis, a job lost, a move, a break-up, or a long illness. St. Paul calls God “the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction” (2 Corinthians 1:3–4). A family in grief often needs to be told that each person grieves differently, and that none of them is doing it wrong.
Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
look on our family in this hard time.
Comfort each of us in the way we need,
the ones who cry and the ones who cannot.
Keep us gentle with one another,
patient with each other’s grief,
and close when it would be easier to pull apart.
Carry us when we cannot carry ourselves.
Amen.
For a family in mourning, there is a prayer for grief.
Praying together as a family: the domestic church
1 min readThe strongest family protection is a family that prays.
The strongest family protection is a family that prays. The Catechism calls the family “the first place of education in prayer,” the “domestic church” where children learn to pray (CCC 2685), and says “daily prayer and the reading of the Word of God strengthen it in charity” (CCC 2205). It does not need to be long: grace at meals, a blessing at the door, a few minutes at night with the Our Father and the Guardian Angel prayer.
Pray for each member by name, including the ones who are away or who have drifted from the faith. There are prayers for one person at a time: a prayer for my husband, a prayer for my wife, and a prayer for my children, with separate pages for a son and a daughter.
Questions
How do I pray a hedge of protection around my family?
Name each member of the household and ask God specifically to surround them — body, mind, and soul — with His protection, in the pattern of Job 1:10. The family protection prayer on this page walks the full household: spouse, children, home, and the bonds between them.
Can I pray protection over family members who don’t believe?
Yes — and you should. Intercession does not require the consent of the person being prayed for; St. Monica prayed seventeen years for Augustine. Pray protection over them and conversion for them, and be prepared for the second prayer to take longer.
What is the best prayer for my children’s protection?
The combination the tradition keeps returning to: the Guardian Angel prayer (each child has one — Matthew 18:10), a parent’s named blessing at bedtime, and Psalm 91 over the household. The dedicated prayer over children on this page gathers a parent’s specific fears — including the digital ones — into one prayer.
What is a short, powerful prayer for family protection?
“Heavenly Father, I place my family in your hands: N., N. and N. Protect each of us in body, mind and soul, keep us from harm and from sin, keep us united, and send your angels to guard us. Amen.” Its power is God’s, not the wording’s; pray it by name and every day.
What is the most powerful psalm for protection over a family?
Psalm 91, the psalm of shelter under God’s wings and of the angels’ guard (Psalm 91:11), and Psalm 121, “The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in” (Psalm 121:8). Neither works as a formula (CCC 2111); both are ways of placing a family in God’s hands.
Our family is going through real spiritual trouble. What should we do?
Pray these prayers as a household, return together to confession and the Eucharist, bless the home — and talk to your parish priest about what is happening. Persistent trouble that frightens the family is exactly what the Church’s priests exist to handle; bringing one in early is wisdom, not overreaction.
The image behind “a hedge of protection” is Job’s, the wall God set around him and his household: a hedge of protection — the prayer, and the passage it comes from.
To keep watch over each member of the household by name, every evening, the AngelGuard app has the Household Vigil — a candle for each person you love.
