What Is Palm?
Palm Sunday opens Holy Week. Its full name is Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, and the double name is the key to the day. In 2027 it falls on 21 March. The liturgy begins outside the church, or at the back of it. Palms are blessed, the Gospel of the entry into Jerusalem is read, and the congregation processes in carrying them. It is the only procession of its kind in the year and the mood is genuinely celebratory. Then, in the same Mass, the Passion is read in full, usually with the congregation taking the part of the crowd. The people who shouted welcome at the door shout for the execution twenty minutes later, and they are the same people, saying both, out loud. That is not an accident of scheduling. The Church could have given the entry into Jerusalem its own Sunday. Putting both in one liturgy makes a point about how quickly a crowd turns, and it puts the congregation inside the crowd rather than watching it. Almost everyone who attends notices the moment their own voice says the wrong thing. The Passion account rotates through Matthew, Mark and Luke across the three-year cycle of readings. John's Passion is read on Good Friday every year without exception. And the palms are not decoration. They are blessed, which makes them a sacramental, and they have a specific onward journey most people never hear about.
Observance & Rules
Palm Sunday is a Sunday, so the ordinary Sunday obligation applies. No separate obligation arises and there is no fasting attached to the day. It falls within Lent, so the Friday abstinence from meat that applies through Lent still applies to the Friday of the following week, which is Good Friday, a day of both fasting and abstinence. Blessed palms are a sacramental. That does not make them magical and it does not mean they must be treated anxiously, but it does mean they should not simply go in the bin when they dry out. The customary disposal for any blessed object is burning or burial. Most parishes collect palms in the weeks before Lent the following year and burn them, and those ashes are what is used on Ash Wednesday. That is the loop the year makes: the palms you carry in the procession come back on your forehead eleven months later.
Practical Guide
Arrive early enough to be outside for the blessing rather than slipping into a pew for the second half. The procession is the part people remember and it is the part most commonly missed. Take the part of the crowd seriously when the Passion is read. It is uncomfortable by design. Keep the palm somewhere you will see it, which is why people traditionally put it behind a crucifix or a picture. When it dries out, do not throw it away; return it to the parish before Lent, or burn it yourself. And treat the week that follows as one thing rather than as a set of optional services. Holy Thursday evening, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil are a single liturgy spread over three days, and Palm Sunday is the doorway into it. Anyone who goes to all of it will tell you the same thing, which is that it does not feel long.
