What you are counting down to
Easter is not a day the Church celebrates and then puts away. Easter Sunday opens a season of fifty days running to Pentecost, and the first eight of them — the Octave — are each kept with the rank of Easter Sunday itself. Forty days of Lent are answered by fifty of celebration, and the proportion is the point.
Counting the days is an old instinct rather than a novelty. Lent is itself a count, and the Church has always marked time towards this date rather than away from it. If the number above is still large, that is what Lent is for; when it gets small, the days from Palm Sunday to the Vigil are the ones worth clearing a diary for.
