What Is Easter?
Easter is the Resurrection of Christ, and it is the reason every other feast exists. It is also not a single day. Easter Sunday opens a season of fifty days that runs to Pentecost, and the first eight of those days, the Octave, are each celebrated as though they were Easter Sunday itself. The date moves because it was never fixed to a calendar month. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, a rule settled in the fourth century that keeps it anchored to Passover, which is where the events actually sit. That is why it can fall anywhere from late March to late April, and why every other movable date in the year, from Ash Wednesday to Pentecost, moves with it. The season is deliberately longer than Lent. Forty days of preparation are answered by fifty days of celebration, and the Church is making a point about proportion. The Alleluia, buried since before Ash Wednesday, returns at the Vigil and is sung through the whole season. The Paschal candle, lit from the new fire, stands in the sanctuary until Pentecost. The Second Sunday of Easter is also kept as Divine Mercy Sunday, a more recent addition to the calendar and now widely observed. It closes the Octave, and it takes the Gospel of that day, in which the risen Christ shows his wounds to Thomas, as its theme: mercy offered to the one who doubted, with the evidence still visible.
Observance & Rules
Easter Sunday is a holy day of obligation, and attendance at the Easter Vigil on Saturday night fulfils it. There is no fasting during the Easter season, and the whole season is treated as a celebration rather than a penance. Catholics are bound to receive Holy Communion at least once a year, and that obligation is ordinarily fulfilled during the Easter season. This is the origin of the phrase "Easter duty". Anyone conscious of grave sin is to go to sacramental confession first. The Ascension falls on the Thursday forty days after Easter, which is May 6 in 2027. In many countries, including much of the United States, it is transferred to the following Sunday. Both practices are legitimate. Check what your own diocese does rather than assuming.
Practical Guide
Keep the season, not just the Sunday. Most people finish Easter by Sunday evening, having spent forty days on Lent. If you gave something up for Lent, the season that follows is the place to notice whether you actually want it back. The Octave is the easiest way in. For eight days the Church treats every day as Easter Sunday, so daily Mass during that week is a genuinely different experience from an ordinary weekday. Divine Mercy Sunday, a week after Easter, is the natural point to go to confession if you did not manage it during Lent. Many parishes schedule extra times for it. If you have children, keep the decorations up for the fifty days rather than clearing them on Monday. Lent gets six weeks of visible change in most Catholic homes and Easter often gets an afternoon. Reversing that is a small thing that teaches a large one. And if you came back to the Church at Easter after a long time away, the next ordinary Sunday is the one that matters. Easter is easy to attend. The second Sunday of Easter is where returning becomes real.
