EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE A Guide for Evening Reflection This practice, recommended by St. Ignatius of Loyola, is essential for daily spiritual protection. A nightly examination helps you identify open doors before the enemy can exploit them. 1. PLACE YOURSELF IN GOD'S PRESENCE "Lord, You have been with me all day. Open my eyes now to see this day as You saw it." 2. GIVE THANKS What gifts did God give me today? What moments of grace did I experience? Thank Him for each one specifically. 3. REVIEW THE DAY Walk through your day hour by hour. Ask: AGAINST GOD: • Did I begin my day with prayer? • Did I neglect my spiritual duties? • Did I use God's name carelessly? • Did I trust in something other than God? AGAINST OTHERS: • Was I impatient, harsh, or unkind? • Did I gossip or speak negatively about someone? • Did I fail to help someone in need? • Am I holding unforgiveness toward anyone? AGAINST MYSELF: • Did I entertain impure thoughts or images? • Did I give in to gluttony, laziness, or excess? • Did I consume media that opened a spiritual door? • Did I tell a lie or act dishonestly? SPIRITUAL WARFARE CHECK: • Did I feel unusual anger, fear, or temptation today? • Was there a moment I felt spiritually attacked? • Did anything happen that felt like more than coincidence? • Did I leave any "open doors" for the enemy? 4. EXPRESS SORROW For any sin or failing: "Lord, I am sorry. I ask Your forgiveness. I renounce this sin and any hold the enemy gained through it." 5. RESOLVE AND PRAY "Lord, with Your grace, I will do better tomorrow. I place this day and this night in Your hands. Cover me with Your Precious Blood as I sleep. Amen." NOTE: This examination does not replace the Sacrament of Confession. If you have committed serious sin, seek Confession as soon as possible.
