Healing from Unforgiveness

Lord, I am carrying something toxic, and I know it. Unforgiveness. It sits in my chest like a stone. It colors every thought about that person. It replays the offense like a video on loop. "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you." — Ephesians 4:31-32 Lord, I know what You are asking me to do. And it feels impossible. HOW CAN I FORGIVE WHEN THE WOUND IS STILL OPEN? You are not asking me to say it did not hurt. You are not asking me to pretend it was okay. You are not asking me to trust them again or reconcile. You are asking me to release them — to take my hands off their throat and place them into Your hands. You are the Judge, not me. HOW CAN I FORGIVE WHEN THEY HAVE NOT APOLOGIZED? Forgiveness is not a transaction. It is not conditional on their repentance. It is a decision I make for my own freedom. Unforgiveness is a prison, Lord, and the person I think I am punishing does not even know they are supposed to be in jail. I am the only one behind bars. HOW CAN I FORGIVE WHEN THE PAIN KEEPS COMING BACK? Forgiveness is not a feeling — it is a choice I may have to make every day, sometimes every hour, until the feeling catches up. I choose it now, Lord. And I will choose it again tomorrow when the anger returns. I FORGIVE THEM: Not because they deserve it. But because You forgave me when I deserved nothing. Not because the offense was small. But because Your mercy is bigger than any offense. Not because it is easy. But because You will give me the grace to do it. Lord, take this bitterness from me. Pull it out by the root. Fill the space it occupied with Your love — the kind of love that forgives seventy times seven. I release them. I release myself. I am free. In Jesus' name. Amen.
