The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
The feast that treats an execution device as a trophy
The Exaltation of the Holy Cross 2026 — Key Dates
What Is The?
The Exaltation of the Holy Cross falls on 14 September. It is a feast of the Lord, which places it above an ordinary memorial, and it is followed the next day by Our Lady of Sorrows. The date comes from a building. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, built over the sites of the crucifixion and the tomb, was dedicated in the year 335, and the relic of the Cross associated with the empress Helena was displayed there. The anniversary of that dedication became the feast. A later event reinforced it, when the relic was recovered from Persian hands in the seventh century and returned to Jerusalem. What the feast is for is stranger than its history. The cross was an instrument of public execution, designed to be humiliating, and Rome used it on slaves and rebels. Early Christians did not decorate with it. That a civilisation eventually put it on top of its buildings, around its necks, and at the front of its churches is one of the more remarkable reversals in human culture, and this feast is the Church looking directly at that reversal rather than letting it become ordinary. Exaltation means lifting up, and the word is doing double work. The Cross is lifted up as a trophy, and the one who hung on it spoke of being lifted up as the way he would draw everyone to himself. For anyone who has been reading this site's material on spiritual protection, this is the feast underneath all of it. Every blessing, every sacramental, every rite of exorcism in the Church works from the same claim: that the decisive battle was already fought, in public, and lost in a way that turned out to be winning.
Observance & Rules
This is a feast rather than a solemnity, and it is not a holy day of obligation. There is no fasting and no requirement to attend Mass, though many parishes offer one. When 14 September falls on a Sunday, the feast takes precedence over the Sunday of Ordinary Time, which is unusual and is a measure of its rank. A plenary indulgence is traditionally available on this day for the public veneration of the Cross, under the usual conditions. The day after is the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the two are deliberately adjacent. The Church looks at the Cross on one day and at the person standing beside it on the next.
Practical Guide
Venerate a crucifix, which simply means looking at one deliberately and praying rather than passing it. Most Catholics own one and stop seeing it within a week of hanging it. If your parish has a relic of the Cross, this is the day it is brought out. Make the sign of the cross slowly at least once today. It is the oldest and most compressed Christian gesture there is, it names the Trinity, and it traces an execution on your own body. Nearly everyone does it too fast to notice. And if you are carrying something at the moment that cannot be fixed, this is the feast for that. Not because suffering is good, which the Church has never taught, but because this day is the Church's claim that suffering is not the end of the sentence.
