The Bible presents God as a healer of body and soul: “I am the LORD who heals you” (Exodus 15:26), and “by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). When we or someone we love is sick, Scripture does two things at once: it takes the suffering seriously and it refuses to let suffering have the last word. The Bible never pretends illness is imaginary, yet from Exodus to the letters of the apostles it insists that God is a healer, and that his care reaches the body, the mind, and the heart alike. The verses below gather that whole witness. Some ask boldly for physical restoration, some speak of the deeper healing won on the cross, and some are simply meant to be prayed at a bedside when words are hard to find. The Catholic Church has always held medicine and prayer together, anointing the sick with oil as the letter of James directs while giving thanks for doctors and nurses. Read these slowly, pray them for the person on your heart, and let them steady you. Each is quoted here in the World English Bible, Catholic Edition.
Exodus 15:26
He said, “If you will diligently listen to the LORD your God’s voice, and will do that which is right in his eyes, and will pay attention to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I am the LORD who heals you.”
Here God names himself, for the first time, the one who heals. The Hebrew title Rophe stands behind every later prayer for healing in Scripture, grounding our petitions in who God says he is.
Isaiah 53:5
But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.
The Church reads this Suffering Servant prophecy as fulfilled in Christ’s Passion. The deepest healing, the mending of the breach between us and God, was accomplished by his wounds before any physical cure.
Jeremiah 17:14
Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise.
A prayer you can make your own word for word. Jeremiah asks for healing and salvation in the same breath, because he knows both come from the same hand.
Psalm 147:3
He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
Not every wound is visible. This verse extends God’s healing to grief and heartbreak, and is often prayed by those recovering from loss rather than from illness.
Psalm 103:2-3
Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits, who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases,
The psalm sets forgiveness and healing side by side as two gifts of the same mercy. Catholic tradition sees the Anointing of the Sick doing exactly this, joining pardon and healing in one sacrament.
James 5:14
Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;
This is the scriptural charter for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The Church still does exactly what James describes: the priest, an elder of the assembly, prays and anoints in the name of the Lord.
James 5:15
and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
The next verse promises both raising up and forgiveness. The Church understands this healing as reaching the whole person, sometimes in body, always in the soul, according to God’s wisdom.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
For the exhausted and the chronically ill, Christ’s invitation is itself a form of healing: rest for the soul when the body cannot yet be well. This verse is a refuge on the hardest days.
1 Peter 2:24
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. You were healed by his wounds.
Peter applies Isaiah’s prophecy to the cross. Notice the past tense: the decisive healing has already happened, and every prayer for a cure is offered within that finished work of Christ.
Jeremiah 30:17
For I will restore health to you, and I will heal you of your wounds,” says the LORD, “because they have called you an outcast, saying, ‘It is Zion, whom no man seeks after.’”
God promises healing precisely to those the world has written off. For anyone who feels forgotten in their sickness, this verse is a direct answer.
Psalm 30:2
LORD my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me.
A short verse of thanksgiving after healing has come. It teaches us to return and give thanks, closing the circle that so many in the Gospels forgot to complete.
Malachi 4:2
But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out and leap like calves of the stall.
The Church hears in the “sun of righteousness” a prophecy of Christ. Healing here is bound up with his coming, and the image of leaping calves promises a restoration full of joy.
Jeremiah 33:6
behold, I will bring it health and healing, and I will cure them; and I will reveal to them abundance of peace and truth.
Health, healing, and peace are promised together, a reminder that God’s healing is never merely the absence of illness but the fullness of shalom he intends for us.
What does the Bible say about healing the sick?
Scripture teaches that God is the ultimate healer of body and soul. In Exodus 15:26 he reveals himself as “the LORD who heals you,” and the Psalms repeatedly ask him to heal both diseases and broken hearts. In the New Testament, Jesus heals the sick throughout the Gospels, and James 5:14 directs the sick to call the elders of the Church to pray over them and anoint them with oil. The Catholic Church continues this in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, holding prayer and medicine together as two gifts of the same God.
Is there a Catholic sacrament for healing?
Yes. The Anointing of the Sick is the Church’s sacrament of healing, drawn directly from James 5:14-15, where the sick call the elders to pray and anoint them in the name of the Lord. A priest anoints the forehead and hands with blessed oil and prays for the person’s healing and forgiveness. The sacrament is for anyone seriously ill, facing surgery, or weakened by age, and may be received more than once. It unites the sick person’s suffering to Christ and asks for healing of body according to God’s will, and always of the soul.
What is a good Bible verse to pray for someone who is sick?
Jeremiah 17:14 is a simple, powerful verse to pray at a bedside: “Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved.” You can pray it in the first person for yourself or change it to name the person you love. Psalm 103:2-3, which blesses the God “who heals all your diseases,” and Matthew 11:28, Christ’s invitation to the weary to come to him for rest, are also often prayed over the sick. Keep the words short and repeat them; Scripture prayed slowly steadies the heart.
How to Pray with These Verses
To pray for healing, begin by naming plainly before God the person and the need, without softening it. Then anchor the request in Scripture: pray Jeremiah 17:14 or Psalm 103 slowly, letting God’s own words shape your asking. Ask boldly for physical healing, and in the same breath entrust the outcome to God’s wisdom, as Christ did in Gethsemane. If the illness is serious, contact your parish so the sick person can receive the Anointing of the Sick, the Church’s own prayer of healing. Give thanks for doctors and nurses as instruments of God’s care, and if healing comes, remember to return and thank him, as Psalm 30 does.
