Morning Prayers for My Family

Most family mornings have no room for a long prayer. These are short enough to say at the door, in the car, or over a child’s head while they tie their shoes. One is enough; said every day, a short prayer does more than a long one said once.

No prayer is powerful because of its wording. A prayer is powerful because of the God it is prayed to, and because it is honest. The most honest prayer for a family is the one that names each person, because God does not love families in general; he loves this husband, this daughter, this grandfather. Put in the names and what each of them is facing today.

Protection and guidance are the two things parents most want for a family scattering into the day: that no one comes to harm, and that everyone makes good choices when no one is watching. Psalm 121 promises God’s care at exactly the moment a family morning ends, at the front door: “The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.”

Many Catholic parents bless their children as they leave the house, tracing a small cross on the forehead with a thumb. A parent’s blessing is not a sacrament and needs no priest; it is simply a parent asking God, out loud and with a hand on the child, to bless them. The words can be the oldest blessing in Scripture, the one God gave to Aaron:

St. Paul opens his letter to the Philippians with a line that could be said every morning for everyone we love: “I thank my God whenever I remember you.” If the same prayer every day starts to feel like a formula, give each morning its own intention. Here is one prayer for each day of the week, for family and friends alike:

The Catechism calls the family “the first place of education in prayer” and says that, for young children especially, “daily family prayer is the first witness of the Church’s living memory” (CCC 2685). It also calls the Christian home “the domestic church,” “a community of grace and prayer, a school of human virtues and of Christian charity” (CCC 1666), and says simply that “Daily prayer and the reading of the Word of God strengthen it in charity” (CCC 2205).

That does not have to mean a long devotion. Most families who manage to pray together in the morning keep it very short and tie it to something that already happens every day:

• At breakfast. The Sign of the Cross, one line of thanks from each person, and grace before meals. Two minutes.
• At the door. A blessing for each child as they leave, or a hand on a spouse’s shoulder and “God be with you.”
• In the car. One Hail Mary on the way to school, with each child choosing whom it is for.
• Before anyone wakes. If mornings in your house are chaos, pray for the family alone, before the chaos starts. It still counts.

Many Catholic families say the Morning Offering together, which gives the whole day to God in one breath. Parents, the Catechism says, “have the mission of teaching their children to pray” (CCC 2226), and children learn to pray mostly by watching their parents do it.

Some mornings the family is not the thing you are praying for. It is the thing you are praying about: a marriage under strain, a teenager who will not speak, money, illness, grief, a quarrel from last night that is still in the kitchen. Scripture’s advice for families is not that they will not hurt each other, but that they will keep forgiving: “bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.” And: “Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath.” Where the sun went down on it anyway, the morning is the next chance.

Not every family eats breakfast together. Some are scattered across time zones, some are in the military or at college, some are divided by divorce, and some are at the same table but no longer at Mass. The morning prayer is the same for all of them: to hold them before God when you cannot hold them yourself. The elder who wrote the Third Letter of John said of the people in his care: “I have no greater joy than this: to hear about my children walking in truth.” Every parent and grandparent of a child who has left the faith knows that sentence from the other side.

The family Christ grew up in was not spared ordinary life. They fled as refugees, lost a child for three days, and lived by the work of a carpenter’s hands. Of those hidden years at Nazareth, St. Luke records only this: “He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.” and “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” Catholic families ask the Holy Family to pray for them because Mary and Joseph have done the ordinary things they are doing.
