Morning Prayer for Protection

Seal the day before the day begins.

A morning prayer for protection: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Lord, this day is yours before it is mine. Protect me and everyone I love in body and soul today: on the road, at work, at school and at home. Keep us from sin and from every evil, and send your angels to guard us in all our ways. Amen.” Below it: the Morning Offering and a sealing prayer for the day, then a short morning prayer, the Sign of the Cross as the Church’s first morning prayer, a morning prayer for healing and protection, one for your family, the prayer that covers everything, and how to thank God in the morning.

The Morning Offering — Full Text

The traditional daily offering, prayed by millions of Catholics every morning.

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

I offer You my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day,

in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world.

I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart:

the salvation of souls, reparation for sin,

and the reunion of all Christians.

I offer them for the intentions of our Holy Father the Pope,

and for the particular intention of this day.

Lord, I give You this day. Every moment, every thought, every action — I surrender it all to You. Use me as Your instrument.

Put on me the full armor of God.

Fill me with Your Holy Spirit.

Open my eyes to see as You see.

Guard me from temptation.

Give me the courage to choose the right.

Let every person I meet today encounter Your love through me.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You.

Amen.

From the Church’s tradition: In the Church’s morning tradition — the Morning Offering of the Apostleship of Prayer, prayed by millions of Catholics daily since the 19th century, joined to a sealing prayer for the day’s protection.

Sealing Prayer for the Day

Sealing the day under the protection of the Most Holy Trinity.

Heavenly Father, before I step into this day, seal me and my household in the protection of the Most Holy Trinity.

IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER:

I place my life under Your sovereign authority. You are the Creator of heaven and earth, and nothing exists outside Your knowledge or control. What You have not permitted cannot touch me.

IN THE NAME OF THE SON:

Cover me with the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ. Every claim the enemy has against me is answered by the Cross. Every accusation is silenced by the Blood. I am washed, I am forgiven, I am redeemed.

IN THE NAME OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:

Seal me with the fire of the Holy Spirit. Let Your presence go with me into every conversation, every meeting, every interaction. Let me be led by Your wisdom and guarded by Your discernment.

SEAL MY SCHEDULE, LORD:

Lord, every appointment, every task, every journey I will make today — I place it under Your protection. Go before me to prepare the way. Stand behind me to guard my back. Walk beside me as my companion.

SEAL MY RELATIONSHIPS, LORD:

Every person I will encounter today — bless our interaction. Guard me from manipulators, from deceivers, and from those who carry spiritual darkness. Give me discernment to recognize wolves dressed as sheep.

SEAL MY VEHICLE, LORD:

As I travel today, surround my car with Your angels. Protect me from accidents, from reckless drivers, and from mechanical failure. Bring me safely to every destination and safely home.

"No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper: and every tongue that resisteth thee in judgment, thou shalt condemn. This is the inheritance of the servants of the Lord." — Isaiah 54:17

Lord, keep me sealed, covered, and protected as I step into this day. Whatever this day brings, I face it with You. Amen.

About this prayer

1 min readHow a day begins decides much of how it goes.

How a day begins decides much of how it goes. The Church’s morning tradition is to give the day away before anything can take it: the Morning Offering hands every prayer, work, joy, and suffering of the coming day to God through the Immaculate Heart of Mary — and once the day is His, it is His to defend.

Below, the classic Morning Offering is followed by a sealing prayer that places you and your household under the protection of the Trinity for the day ahead. Together they take three minutes. Prayed before the phone comes out, they change the entire shape of a morning.

Why mornings are spiritual ground

1 min readThe tradition is unanimous that the first minutes of the day are contested ground.

The tradition is unanimous that the first minutes of the day are contested ground. Whatever claims them tends to keep them: anxiety, the news, the inbox — or God. The Morning Offering is the Church’s simple, radical answer: before the day makes any demands, the whole of it is already given away. A day offered to God in advance cannot be stolen in quite the same way.

The sealing prayer adds the explicitly protective dimension: it walks through the Trinity — the Father’s sovereignty, the Son’s Precious Blood, the Spirit’s indwelling — and places the day’s travel, work, family, and unknowns inside that protection. It is the morning twin of the night protection prayer, and households that pray both bracket the entire day in God.

If you do only one thing from this page, do this: pray the Morning Offering before you touch your phone. That single ordering of the morning — God before the feed — is itself a protection, and it takes less than a minute.

When to pray it

1 min readImmediately on waking — before the phone, before the news.
  • Immediately on waking — before the phone, before the news.
  • Aloud with the household at breakfast, if mornings allow it.
  • Before leaving the house — the sealing prayer at the door.
  • Renewed briefly at midday when the morning’s peace has worn thin.

A short morning prayer for protection

1 min readFor a morning with no time: one breath before your feet touch the floor.

For a morning with no time: one breath before your feet touch the floor. The psalms are full of morning prayers; this one is David’s: “LORD, in the morning you will hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly” (Psalm 5:3).

Lord, thank you for this new day.

Keep me and those I love safe in body and soul,

keep me from sin,

and let me do your will today.

Amen.

Another psalm verse fits waking up exactly: “I laid myself down and slept. I awakened, for the LORD sustains me” (Psalm 3:5).

The Sign of the Cross: the Church’s first morning prayer

1 min readBefore any longer prayer, the Church’s oldest morning prayer takes three seconds.

Before any longer prayer, the Church’s oldest morning prayer takes three seconds. The Catechism describes it: “The Christian begins his day, his prayers, and his activities with the Sign of the Cross: ‘in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.’ The baptized person dedicates the day to the glory of God and calls on the Savior’s grace which lets him act in the Spirit as a child of the Father. The sign of the cross strengthens us in temptations and difficulties” (CCC 2157).

Made slowly and meant, it is itself a prayer for protection: it puts the whole day under the name of the Trinity and the sign of the Cross. Many families add a small cross traced on each child’s forehead as they leave the house. Those who have holy water at home often bless themselves with it at the same moment; there is more on that on the holy water prayer.

A morning prayer for healing and protection

1 min readFor a morning when you wake up sick, in pain, or dreading a hospital appointment, or when someone you love is.

For a morning when you wake up sick, in pain, or dreading a hospital appointment, or when someone you love is. The line from Lamentations was written in a time of disaster, and it is still true on hard mornings: “It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22–23).

Lord Jesus, your mercies are new this morning.

Touch what is sick in me, in body, mind or soul,

and heal what you will heal.

Give me strength for today, and nothing more than today.

Protect me from harm and from despair,

bless the doctors and nurses who care for me,

and keep me close to you whatever the day brings.

Amen.

For longer prayers for every kind of illness, see Catholic prayers for healing. For the seriously ill, the Anointing of the Sick gives “strengthening, peace and courage” (CCC 1520); ask a priest.

A morning prayer for my family’s protection

1 min readMost parents pray for their family in the morning as everyone scatters: to school, to work, onto the road.

Most parents pray for their family in the morning as everyone scatters: to school, to work, onto the road. Pray it by name, one person at a time, even if the names are all you have time for.

Lord, I place my family in your hands this morning:

N., N. and N.

Go with each of them today.

Keep them safe on the road and at school and at work.

Keep them kind to each other and honest with the world.

Send your angels to guard them in all their ways,

and bring us all home again tonight.

Amen.

A longer family morning prayer is on the morning prayer for my family. There are also prayers for one person in particular: a prayer for my husband, a prayer for my wife, and the prayer for family protection for the whole household.

A prayer that covers everything: the Our Father

1 min readIf you want one prayer that asks for everything a day needs, the Church’s answer is the one Jesus taught.

If you want one prayer that asks for everything a day needs, the Church’s answer is the one Jesus taught. The Catechism calls the Lord’s Prayer “truly the summary of the whole gospel” (CCC 2761). It asks for today’s bread, forgiveness, and in its last line, protection: “Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13).

The Catechism explains that in this petition “evil is not an abstraction, but refers to a person, Satan, the Evil One” (CCC 2851), and that when we pray it we ask to be freed “from all evils, present, past, and future, of which he is the author or instigator” (CCC 2854). Every morning prayer for protection is, at bottom, a longer way of saying that line. The Morning Offering above covers the rest of the day from the other side: it hands God everything the day will contain, “prayers, works, joys, and sufferings,” before it contains it.

How to thank God in the morning

2 min readProtection is not the only thing to ask for in the morning, and it is better asked after thanks.

Protection is not the only thing to ask for in the morning, and it is better asked after thanks. The Church’s own morning prayer, Morning Prayer (Lauds) in the Liturgy of the Hours, has the Canticle of Zechariah at its heart every day, and it ends with the dawn: “the dawn from on high will visit us, to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:78–79). The Catechism names “morning and evening prayer” as the first of the daily rhythms of prayer the Church proposes (CCC 2698).

Thank you, Lord, for the night that is over

and for this new day.

Thank you for my life, my breath, my home,

and for the people I will see today.

Thank you for your mercy, new this morning.

Satisfy me with your loving kindness,

and guide my feet into the way of peace.

Amen.

The psalms have a morning thanksgiving for every mood: “Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days” (Psalm 90:14); “I will sing aloud of your loving kindness in the morning. For you have been my high tower, a refuge in the day of my distress” (Psalm 59:16).

Questions

What is the Morning Offering?

A short traditional prayer offering everything in the coming day — prayers, works, joys, sufferings — to God through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in union with the Mass being offered around the world. It has been the backbone of Catholic mornings since the Apostleship of Prayer spread it in the 19th century.

How do I pray for protection in the morning?

Offer the day first (the Morning Offering), then seal it: ask the Father’s sovereignty, the Son’s Blood, and the Spirit’s presence over yourself and your household for the specific day ahead — travel, work, school, the things you are dreading. The sealing prayer on this page walks it fully.

How long should morning prayer take?

The two prayers on this page take about three minutes. Faithfulness beats length: a three-minute morning rule kept daily forms more than an hour kept occasionally. Build from there if you want more — the Angelus and the armor of God prayer extend the same rhythm.

What is a powerful morning prayer for protection?

The Sign of the Cross, the Morning Offering and a short request for the day: “Lord, this day is yours before it is mine. Protect me and everyone I love in body and soul today, keep us from sin and from every evil, and send your angels to guard us. Amen.” Its power is not in the wording but in the God it is addressed to (CCC 2111).

What is a prayer that covers everything?

The Our Father, which the Catechism calls “the summary of the whole gospel” (CCC 2761). It asks for God’s will, today’s bread, forgiveness, and protection: “deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13). The Morning Offering, which gives God everything the day will hold, is the other traditional answer.

How do I thank God in the morning?

Before asking for anything: thank him for the night, for waking, for the day and the people in it. The psalms give the words: “Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days” (Psalm 90:14).

Why pray before checking my phone?

Because the first voice of the day sets its terms. The phone delivers the world’s anxieties before your feet hit the floor; the Morning Offering delivers the day to God before the world gets a word in. Which goes first is not a small choice — it decides who frames everything after.

A shorter form for the doorway: a sealing prayer for the day — placing the hours ahead under God’s protection.

One of the Church’s oldest morning prayers of protection begins “I arise today”: St. Patrick’s Breastplate — the whole prayer, line by line.
